9p3- Ate. Apart from improvements in stamina, I've yet to experience any muscle growth. The main problem is that I'm not eating enough, so I'm forcing myself to eat. WebMD suggests I make smoothies... but the fruit variety of smoothies are probably out of the hentai game dev budget, and I sure as hell ain't making TV Dinner Smoothies. I've resorted to overeating, and I'll try to snack on small stuff throughout the day.

9/29

9/27- Went to a video gamer party. Got a lot of DDR related exercise, feet are sore. Major sausage fest, but there was one qt π, got her number. I'm pretty sure that's the farthest I'm going to get with that one though, so let's call it catch and release. Gambled and lost $5 of your kickstarter money in a poker game. It's good for big kickstarter teams to be transparent with what they do with your money, like "spent 20k on artist", but when it's only a few people... the transparency can get kind of personal.

9/28- Party kept going 'til 2. Went home. Friend came over, entertained him for a few hours. Slept 14 hours straight due to having only 2 hours of sleep the prior night. And here we are.

9/29-
7p0- Woke.
8p1- Attempted to locate my missing external harddrive. After general searching was ineffective, switched to Batman cleaning search method. Method entails cleaning room while screaming "WHERE IS IT!?". Neatly organized my computer wiring.

9/25-Monthly Progress Report

September was not a very typical month of progress for me. I put a lot of time in meticulously casting our voice actresses. I created a database of potential actresses and cast(ed) them based on my scoring criteria. The final potential list was so competitive that even a few good actresses didn't make the cut. Originally I planned to hold auditions after the game's release, but due to the imminent trailer,  I had to have voices for the trailer so the game has been delayed. Delays aside, the casting went extremely well. For a game with a story that goes so much farther than the average delivery dude porno script, I would say that my time and effort was not squandered.

I've been working on the trailer. Money is tight...a little too tight for my comfort, so I'm going to hold another fundraiser. The game is getting close to beta, but I weighed my options carefully and decided that a "trailer/fundraiser detour" would be best, especially given the fact that these websites allows us to expand brand awareness. I've spent a lot of time on this trailer. I even voice acted the female characters as an example for the actresses, because when they read the script, some precise inflections may be lost in translation.

I've been studying programming. We have a lead programmer, but I want to help him out and speed up the game's progress, so I'm hitting the books. One may argue that I should finish my side of the game first-"the primary assets", but finishing this programming course will allow me to be "on call" for the lead programmer in case he feels that there are any easier tasks to delegate to me in the interests of time efficiency.

As for this month's actual game progress? I've been working mostly on the three above factors, so the game's completion percentage has not been raised. Let's see: The huge chunk of time casting actresses? Chalk it up as a delay, but it was worth it for the quality. Trailer? A necessary detour, but if you consider that more than 80% of the assets created for the trailer are going to be reused, you could call it another delay for quality. Programming? Once I'm helping with programming tasks, we will see an earlier game launch date.

Current to do list:

Primary Assets: The necessary assets required to put Aching Dreams into Playable Beta. Estimated time to finish this section: 1 to 2 months.
  • Art: 99%
    • Hentai Scenes: 100%
    • Battle 98%
      • Guns: 100%
      • Survivors
        • Survivor Sprites: 100%
        • Survivor Ability effects: 12 hours
      • Monsters: 95%
        • Monster, Healer: 1d
      • Misc:
        • Barricade destroyed 2h
    • Character Portraits: 100%.
      • Character face portraits: 100%
      • Character beach portraits: 100%
      • Character nude portraits: 100%
      • Character normal portraits: 100%
  • Interface: 85.5%.
    • Pre-Battle menu: 6h
    • Day 2 Tutorial: 1d
    • Isabel's Help Menu: 1d
  • Story: 98%
    • Main Characters Storylines: 100%
    • Morning Events Storylines: 1d
    • Bad endings: 5h
    • Reactions to gifts given: 8h
    • BASICS Inputs: 10h
    • Proofreading: 12h
  • Programming:
    • Rigging extra characters for combat: ~1-8d
    • Learning programming to help lead programmer: ~55 hours
    • Carrying out tasks assigned by lead programmer: Varies.
  • Music and other sounds: 90%.
    • Misc monster sounds: 3h
  • Game Design: 98% (note that most of the game mechanics have only been tested "on paper" and still require gamebalancing once the beta is made)
    • A few data tables still need to be finished, and some other secret stuff.
Beta Milestone: The game will be playable, but many features will be left out. A select group of players (tbd) will be involved in balancing the game, mainly combat.
  • Game Balancing: 60%. ~1 to 6 weeks for both me and programmer to finish, but my own participation will probably be limited to simple QA.
    • "Long Term" game balancing: 0% I was able to test the game's combat design from a shorter perspective, usually consisting of 1 to 7 days at a time on testing programs. I wasn't able to test longer periods consisting of 30 to 70 days because the preliminary programs I made for it involved too much human calculation, so I had to simply guesstimate on what would be a good balance when it involved items and player survival periods. When the game is closer to beta, it will be more feasible to balance the various long term variables for play.
    • Combat balancing: 90%. Many of the abilities have been proven "on paper" already. From a day to day perspective in this game, I do not foresee any short term balancing problems that cannot be solved with a quick value change.
Shippable Milestone: Finishing the above will put the game in Shippable status. The game will be finished to the point where players can play and finish the game, but some features will be still under construction. The game will be actually on sale at this point, though.

  • Dealing with initial onslaught of bug complaints: ?
Gold Milestone: Upon finishing this section, the game will be finished to the point where I hope players will be satisfied with the overall product. The product should basically fulfill the project's expected outline as described in the original kickstarter/offbeatr.
  • Three way relationships: ~11 days.
    • Threesome1: Art is 100%, Story is 25%.
    • Threesome2: Art is 95%, Story is 0%
    • Threesome3: 0%
    • Threesome4: 0%
  • Voice Acting: ~30%. ~Variable # of days. Actresses have been cast.
  • Bikini mode combat portraits: 4d
  • New Captain portraits: 2d
Backer Rewards and Extra Polish Milestone: Upon finishing this section, I will be completely satisfied with the game's content. I might skip over a few "polish" items and elect to not draw them in the interest of time or if the item in question does not add significant value to the game. The features and items in the below list are subject to change.
  • Commercial portraits: 3d
  • Multiple character blowjob scene: 40h
  • Extra Veronica H Scene: 25h
  • Extra Character Portraits: ~5 days.
  • Misc drawings for dating sim section: 4d. This section is left intentionally vague to remain spoiler free.
    • Larissa: 1 scene
    • Stella: 1 character
    • Isabel: 4 characters
    • Zoe: 1 scene
  • Extra backgrounds: 4d
    • Spoiler free background 1
    • Spoiler free background 2
  • Backer On-Demand scenes: ~18 days. Creates additional scenes with either AD3 or AD2 chars. Depends on the backers that bought this tier.
  • Misc reward fulfillment.

Expansion Milestone: Adds a few characters. I'm going to come up with a few concepts and allow players to decide who should be in the expansion. The characters include playable characters during combat, some dating scenarios and hentai scenes at the minimum.

Disclaimer: My experience has shown that I am simply horrible at giving time estimates, but I am getting better  at estimating because I am beginning to understand how much time an item can take on a case by case basis.

TL;DR: I think we'll start selling the game in November. Better guess is January, but December is possible.

12a4- Came up with an AD3 unrelated game design. Cliffnotes version: A virus disables humans from having a consciousness, due to a problem with DNA. Anyone that comes into contact with the airborne virus becomes essentially brain dead. Before it manages to wipe out all of humanity, people get into stasis vats that stops mitosis. The only thing that's not frozen is a part of their subconsciousness. Scientists controlled robots with their subconsciousness and eventually created clones, or "Lives" for people to control within the stasis vat. The Lives allows everyone to live again. The experience of controlling a Life is not perfectly the same. It's a dream-like simulation. What the Life sees is remotely transferred to the Host, and the Host experiences it with a vague resemblance based on the host's past experience(funny enough it also would explain the reuse of textures and animations). The consequences of death are lower now, because as soon as you die, you can simply control a fresh four year old clone that has yet to experience consciousness. Hosts must also concentrate on every Life they occupy. While you can genetically modify a Life to be as strong as you want, the bigger the disconnect between Host and Life, the more concentration it will require. The more concentration it requires, the larger the partition. Each Life you control takes up a permanent partition of your brain to concentrate on. So this is like a huuuge way of explaining that the number of lives in this game is limited, and the player is given the choice of giving the Life superior attributes/genetics at the cost of a lower number of lives. You never get the partition back, even if the Life dies, because the dead Life just continues to send blank stimuli, and sometimes even flashbacks. In terms of gameplay, it allows for the player to die, but not essentially have a game over. You don't restart from a save. You lose a life. Life is cheaper for everyone. In terms of characters, you'll probably kill the same characters again and again, and even form rivalries that can last multiple lifetimes. The design solves the problem with many TV serials where the hero kills the villain and we never see from the villain again. It's kind of like how Batman throws the Joker in jail a hundred times rather than killing him.

6a16- Something weird happened. I stumbled upon something, and now I apparently have the power to ruin someone's internet life. This person isn't doing anything inherently bad... The closest thing I can relate it to, well , it's like I found out that Santa isn't real, and I can tell all the other kids that I have undeniable proof that Jason's dad was climbing through chimneys. But that would just make everyone sad... So maybe I'll keep this person's identity a secret. No harm, no foul. But this person may use it for harm one day... Hmmmm... And no, all my internet sleuthing does not count as AD3 work. So I internetted for four hours, and today was a freaggin waste.

9/9

9/8- Did some voice acting stuff, got lots of exercise, but not much work done.

9/9-
2p0- Woke.
3p1- Listened to the voices in my PC, ate.
I have to say, that this gem is probably one of the funniest voice over demos I've had the pleasure of listening to.

I have a spreadsheet with potential actresses. I first evaluate the actress based on her ability to act, her willingness to perform sexual scenes, the sexiness of her voice, and the cost. Most of the time, these factors are clouded in mystery. Take for instance, a woman that was scouted through a sex based ad- While that woman would be GGG, her ability to act is in question, and I would have to do some internet sleuthing (stalking) in order to determine the accuracy of all the factors. The aforementioned factors make up for the overall rating of the actress.

Next, I rate the actresses based on how well I believe they would perform with each character. I've gotten some audition files, but I admit there is some guesswork involved. Some actresses have a great range and can voice many characters, some can only voice one or two.

Next we have the characters themselves. Some have leading roles, some do not. In the order of how much of a leading role the characters are: (does not reflect the quality of the role!)
S tier= Olga, Isabel, Larissa, Terra
A tier= Zoe, Stella
B tier= Elaine
C tier= Veronica
D tier= Beatrice, Carmen

So the actresses that have the highest overall score usually get the first pick for the leading roles, unless there's an actress who has a low range. After that I give them a sample of the dirty script, and they either say "cool with me" or they flip the fuck out and run for the hills, and that's how Willy Wonka Chocolate Bars are made!

9/7- The intro that was never made

Here's a scene we're cutting out of the game, because it's too damn ambitious.
10 seconds of sunrise. At the beginning of each day, the player sees this cutscene. It is accompanied by Delibes - Coppélia - Waltz (the song is in public domain, but commercial usage of a person's MP3 is not free) The caption at the bottom is intermittently popping up, kind of like how a lot of arcade games used to put "insert coin for 1 credit(s)". The sunrise is quite easy to do, and I would probably have to steal a royalty free picture from Nasa to hook it up together.
10 seconds of Iacchus against pure black. A speck of gray slowly brightens into a visible, white like star. Iacchus rotates slowly, which is difficult since the planet was rendered in detail in 2D, but my current 3D version of Iacchus is really low detailed. I suck at using 3D, so I'd have to learn about 3D more in detail just to get one thing right.
7 seconds of a shot for shot tribute to Space Odyssey 2001. I'd replace the habitat ring with an actual 3D animated habitat ring.
15 seconds. We see a shot from inside the bunk. It's another tribute to Space Odyssey.  You can see Iacchus outside the window, seemingly rotating in a circle. Yeah, Iacchus should be wayyyy bigger in that picture, but hey, I'm not going to go back and redo all the sex scenes to illustrate this. I can't afford to have the technical accuracy of James Cameron (nor can I afford a science adviser). We'll reposition the shot so that the bed is not in view. It's important, because you're not supposed to see the Captain at all for this morning cutscene.
7 second shot. This is where it goes off the budget rails.  We see Isabel walking through base. I'm just using the battle background, but use your imagination. The camera pans to follow her, as we see other members of the crew going about their daily business, welding stuff, carrying boxes... Isabel is stops at a door, with a cup of joe and a zombie slab of meat.
15 seconds. Isabel places the tray down on a box outside the door, and then she knocks twice. The knock is inaudible, but uses the music instead. http://youtu.be/dixdXcZouZ8?t=1m11s If you listen to that little jingle, right at 1m15, there's two notes, "Dah, dah", that we use to give sound to her knock. She salutes and just stands there for 10 seconds. Nothing moves. Note that the portrait is just an example, so for the rest of this intro, we're using the camera angle of Isabel in front of the captain's door. Note the caption at the bottom is still continuously blinking.

10 seconds. Finally, Isabel gets a little impatient and says, Sir.
5 seconds. Isabel drops a 4th wall joke. There aren't a ton of fourth wall jokes. If you take into account the fact that Isabel is the player's tutorial guide that teaches the player what to click, then the above joke sort of falls in line with that.
7 seconds. The door opens. If the player has slept with a girl in the previous night, the girl will come out of the door and leave in that direction. Isabel will say "Oh. Excuse me." (as if she's the one needing to be excused). Obviously I'd have to change it if Isabel was the character he slept with. If there was a threesome the previous night, Isabel would say "Well!". And if there are no characters he slept with, she'd open the door herself, peek in, and say "Ah. Sorry, sir." (implying he is dressing). The door closes.
10 seconds pass while Isabel waits. The door opens, and Isabel says good morning. Note, you never see the Captain during this. The camera has always been at somewhat of an angle, so you can't see who's inside. Fade to black. If the player clicks before the cutscene ends, we just skip the whole thing.

So I'm not actually going to make any of this. It was planned at one point, and I thought it'd be a great touch, but I really do have to finish the game. The only parts I can really keep in are the first 3 shots, and even then, I'll probably drastically cut their detail. I didn't bother actually timing this intro to the waltz.

4a13- Looked for some public domain space images. I'm thinking of settling with no space backdrop, kind of like how in pictures of the moon, you don't see any stars because of local light sources. That sort of emptiness definitely gives a better "dark planet" vibe. All the pictures of space are too pretty anyways. Worked on first day rewrite.

9/4

9/3-
1p0- Woke. No sleep.
5p4- Got home from a dental appointment. I go to a dental school and get practiced on by newbs. It fits the hentai game dev budget. It's the beginning of the school year and this student flat out sucks. She stabbed me on accident. I asked her what she likes to do for fun, and she said she has kids. Fun? Ain't nobody got time for dat. It's a stressful environment where their teachers chew them out in front of me in a passive aggressive manner. Of all my years going there, Heather was my favorite. She was far from perfect, but she sustained herself through a fun and perky attitude. We joked around a lot. I told her that she reminded me of Buttercup from the Power Puff Girls. I based Terra's personality off of her.
6p5- Attempted to sleep. Failed.
7p6- Played games. Went back to sleep.
And that's a wrap for 9/3, because of my irregular sleeping schedule. 6h day.

9/4-
Few days ago, was testing an AD3 related program. It was compiling just fine and then strangely enough, the next time I tried to compile it with the exact same code, it wouldn't compile it anymore. I've been studying programming without actually typing any code into the compiler because I was trying to fix it at the same time, but I should've swallowed my pride and formatted already. The worst part was the lingering doubt in my mind that it wasn't a computational fault, but my own human error in the code.

Must be weird for a customer to hop on here and think "any progress updates?", and I'll say "yeah, the whole team has been really productive. It took me two days to format. Also, I have a cute dentist".

12a0- Woke up. 5h. Fuck sleep, I gotsta make h-games.
1a1- Internetted. Scheduled appointment with an ISP tech to come look at the internet connection.
2a2- Ate.
3a3- Managed to borrow a secondary laptop for coding purposes. Finished setting it up. Got my morning journal writing tendencies out of the way.
Difficulty 1/10 Efficiency 5/5
4a4- Studied. Rewrote some of the main event story. The story in question is the player's first day. Before, the story started off in media res, due to average player's tendency to skip the beginning text. If we can quickly impress the player, the player would feel more obligated to invest time into reading the story, so we wanted to impress the player by showing combat very early on. Since I'm working on an additional trailer, I'm going back to redo and heavily extend the introduction. Think of it as the kickstarter trailer, where the

9/2

9/1: Did troubleshooting. Internet connection's on the fritz, so I got a new cheap router to replace the 10 year old one, and that didn't help. After logging the disconnections for three days, I've noted that the connection would die whenever someone in the household was using a lot of bandwidth, but there has to be more than one active user on the router. I've exhausted all of the possible solutions that I can come up with, and I will seek professional assistance from my ISP. Also troubleshooting a programming problem, with this stupid thing called json "jizz on". Issue remains unresolved. Did some learning. Stressful day.

I'm brushing up on my programming skills at the moment so I can assist the lead programmer. I'm focusing on programming when my concentration is at its highest. When my concentration wanes, I'll switch to the remaining story and art assets, of which there are very few of.
